Hey there, adventurers!
Just because you’re a Grandpa doesn’t mean you can’t conquer your steepest challenges... And the proof is with Paul Freestone, a man with a heart as big as his dreams—and a recent adventure that took him all the way to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro!
Paul had been planning this climb for 14 years, and when the time finally came, he was ready to take on Africa’s highest peak. But as with any great adventure, it wasn’t just the physical challenge that mattered—it was also about respecting the environment. Kilimanjaro requires all trekkers to follow strict "Leave No Trace" guidelines, meaning all waste—including toilet paper—must be carefully packed away in eco-friendly bags.
That’s when Paul found us.
Being a volunteer for North Yorkshire Waste Reduction and Plastic Prevention, Paul is used to finding great alternatives to plastic. When he discovered our biodegradable poo bags, he was impressed by how well they ticked all the boxes for sustainable waste disposal, and he reached out for just a couple of rolls to help with his journey. (No, he wasn’t expecting 120 bags—he was aiming for a smooth and efficient trek!)
The climb itself? Brutal. Paul battled altitude sickness, howling winds, and a challenging descent that took every ounce of physical and mental strength. But he pushed on. Despite the exhaustion and the toll on his body, he made it to Stella Point at 5,756 meters—where, after a brief rest, he celebrated by taking out a fridge magnet from his granddaughter. It’s a drawing of him and his grandkids climbing a mountain, and it made the tough journey just a little bit sweeter.
Through it all, Paul did what he set out to do: leave the mountain as pristine as he found it, thanks in part to the biodegradable bags that helped him stick to his environmental principles. It’s a small action that made a big difference.
Now back home in Yorkshire, Paul’s reflecting on the next challenge. Will he return to Kilimanjaro for round two? Maybe (when his toenails have recovered!). One thing’s for sure: if there’s a mountain to climb, Paul’s ready. And he’ll be well-equipped to leave no trace behind!
We’re honoured to have been a small part of his incredible adventure, and we hope his story inspires you as much as it inspired us. Whether you’re conquering mountains or just out for a hike, remember: every step counts—especially when it comes to protecting our planet.
Thanks again, Paul, for sharing your story with us. We can’t wait to see what’s next!
Until next time, stay adventurous and eco-conscious!
